Planning Enforcement Working Group

The Parish Council is taking further steps to ensure that development within Bishop Monkton is carried out responsibly, transparently, and in line with the agreed plans that protect the character of our village.

During our meeting on 17 February, councillors confirmed the establishment of a Planning Enforcement Working Group. This decision follows ongoing concerns from residents about developments not always adhering to approved plans, as well as the wider impact that construction activity can have on daily village life.

The new Working Group will bring together councillors, residents, and developers with a shared aim: to ensure that development plans are properly followed and that disruption to the village is kept to a minimum.

Why this matters

Over recent weeks, several issues have been raised regarding compliance with planning conditions, communication between developers and the community, and the cumulative impact of construction traffic. The need for proper and effective oversight has become is very clear – particularly important now that the Avant development has been granted.

What the Working Group will do

The Planning Enforcement Working Group will:

  • Monitor active development sites within the parish
  • Liaise with North Yorkshire Council’s Planning Enforcement team
  • Engage directly with developers to ensure commitments are met
  • Provide residents with a clear route to raise concerns
  • Report issues promptly so that action can be taken where necessary

This collaborative approach is designed to strengthen accountability while ensuring that the needs and safety of residents remain at the forefront of local development.

How you can get involved

Residents can contribute, whether by joining the Working Group, reporting concerns, or helping to monitor activity in specific areas of the village. Your local knowledge and observations are invaluable in helping us protect the character and wellbeing of Bishop Monkton.

The Council is committed to ensuring that development enhances our community rather than disrupts it — and with your support, this new Working Group will play a key role in achieving that.

If you’d like to join the Working Group or indeed report issues to it, please contact us at PEWG@bishopmonkton-pc.gov.uk
