Vehicle Activated Sign Installed to Boost Road Safety in the Village

Today marks an important milestone for our community as the first of our Vehicle Activated Signs (VAS) have been installed within the village. Read on for more details...

Vehicle Activated Signs

The signs are designed to gently remind drivers that they are exceeding the speed limit and encourage them to slow down.

The first of the signs has been installed by the village hall and it tracks vehicle speed just at the point of the 30mph signs at the village entrance. This morning, several vehicles came through those signs at excessive speeds but had actually slowed down as the sign illuminated so we have high hopes that this will lead to safer roads for residents and visitors driving through.

The second sign which will be installed at the other end of the village on the Knaresborough Road has unfortunately been slightly delayed due to recent rule changes in NYC which now prohibit VAS being mounted on the type of lamp posts we have in the village. North Yorkshire Highways are currently working on another option for us and we’ll know more soon.

A Collaborative Effort

This initiative has been made possible through the joint collaboration between the Village Hall and the Parish Council. By working together and sharing costs, both organisations have demonstrated a shared commitment to improving safety and wellbeing for residents, visitors, and those passing through.

Why VAS Matters

  • Immediate feedback: Drivers receive a clear, visual reminder to slow down.
  • Proven effectiveness: Studies show VAS can reduce speeding and improve compliance with speed limits.
  • Community benefit: Safer roads mean greater peace of mind for pedestrians, cyclists, and families.

The Parish Council and Village Hall see VAS as a practical and proactive measure to increase road safety within the village, and we hope it will encourage drivers to adhere to recommended speed limits.

Looking Ahead

The installation of these signs is just the beginning. The Parish Council will continue to monitor their impact and explore further initiatives to ensure our roads remain safe for everyone. Residents are encouraged to share feedback on the effectiveness of the signs and any additional measures they feel would benefit the community.
