Traffic Calming: The council discussed various traffic calming measures and the work recently done with NYC Road Safety around things that can be done within the village. NY Highways visited the village and along with a council member, looked at the various issues that we’ve recently brought up such as sign positioning, white lining and rumble strips etc. Highways will be checking those aspects for us and scheduling maintenance where they fall into the need for intervention.

We also had a particular interest in Vehicle Activated Sign systems and were guided as to what we should look at and where they should be sited. Bottom line? Thanks to the Village Hall’s generous offer to co-fund a pair of VAS systems, (one for each end of the Knaresborough Road within the village), the council will be moving forward with the purchase. The design we’re looking at will capture vehicle speed and numbers data too so we’re looking at posting the information on our website monthly for those who love data! We’ll post more on this activity as we move forward. We also discussed village ‘gateways’, several villages around us have them and whilst we all like and support the idea, have decided to revisit in a year or perhaps earlier if we’re able, in part due to the cost of the VAS systems.

Drop in sessions: We also discussed ways that we could be more accessible to residents who perhaps might not wish to talk in public or attend the formal meeting and decided to see if the village would like us to hold ‘drop in’ sessions. We’ll do a proper news article on it shortly with more information and we’ll present the idea formally at the next Annual Meeting and if people are supportive, we’ll do it! Feel free to get in touch with views ahead of that though if you wish; just send an email here

Lighting: We’ve recently been asked about lighting in that very dark area between the end of Glenroyd Cottages and Claremont Lane. There is a light closer to the Claremont Lane end that was reported as broken in November but has not been fixed by NYC. It seems, once a light has been reported as broken, it can’t be reported again so Cllr Culshaw has made a formal complaint to move it forward. To address the area back from that towards Glenroyd Cottages, the council is investigating low level and low impact lighting that will make things a little safer walking in the dark and ensure that we minimise stray light, so more on that to come.

Traffic lights on future roadworks: The council is looking at ways that we can ensure traffic lights for future works are considered ahead of full road closures. Members of the public are rightly irritated by the constant closing of the Hungate/Boroughbridge Road area given the unsuitability of the ford for all vehicles.

VE Day Celebrations: An item on the agenda this evening was around VE Day and whether we knew of any existing plans for commemorative events. We know that Gary Cross from the Masons Arms is keen to do something and would welcome ideas.
